Quick answer
What insurance does a physiotherapy clinic need in Ontario?
Every practising physiotherapist in Ontario must carry professional liability of at least $5 million per incident with no deductible, and 10 years of tail coverage, under College of Physiotherapists of Ontario rules. The clinic itself also needs its own program: commercial general liability, entity professional liability for vicarious claims, property and equipment, business interruption, cyber for patient records and, where there are staff, EPL.
Two layers of protection: the physiotherapist and the clinic
The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario requires every practising physiotherapist to carry professional liability insurance of at least $5 million per incident, with no deductible and no unusual exclusions, and to maintain tail coverage for at least 10 years after they stop practising. That protects the individual.
The clinic is a separate business. When a patient is injured, claims often name the clinic as well as the practitioner, and a clinic can be held vicariously responsible for the people who work there. Entity professional liability, general liability, property and cyber coverage protect the business itself.

What coverage does a physiotherapy clinic need?
These are the coverages a broker will usually build into a physio clinic program.
Entity professional liability
Protects the clinic when a treatment claim names the business, including claims involving physiotherapists, kinesiologists, assistants and contractors. Confirm how it works with each practitioner's own policy.
- Vicarious liability for staff and contractors
- Physiotherapist assistants and support staff
- Coordinated with individual policies

Commercial general liability
CGL covers the premises risks that practitioner malpractice policies do not: a patient slipping in the waiting room, a visitor tripping on a mat, or damage to your landlord's property. Most commercial leases require it.
- Slips and falls in the clinic
- Damage to the landlord's premises
- Usually $2 million to $5 million

Property, equipment and business interruption
Your leasehold improvements, treatment equipment, furniture and inventory are the clinic's biggest physical assets. Property and equipment breakdown coverage protect them, and business interruption helps replace lost income if a fire, flood or equipment failure closes the clinic.
- Treatment tables and modalities
- Rehab gym equipment
- Leasehold improvements

Cyber and privacy liability
Ontario clinics that hold personal health information are health information custodians under PHIPA and must notify patients, and in many cases the Information and Privacy Commissioner, after a privacy breach. Cyber insurance helps pay for breach response, notification, system recovery and lost income after a ransomware attack.
- Ransomware and system recovery
- Breach notification and legal help
- See clinic cyber and privacy insurance

Physio clinic risks worth planning for
Contractor physiotherapists
Many clinics engage physiotherapists as independent contractors. Your agreements should require each practitioner to carry College compliant insurance and provide proof every year, and the clinic should still carry its own entity coverage.
- Collect proof of each practitioner's policy annually
- Check the $5 million minimum and no deductible
- Keep entity coverage for the clinic

Motor vehicle accident patients and billing
Clinics treating auto accident patients deal with insurer billing, documentation and disputes. Billing errors or allegations can lead to regulatory and legal costs, which legal expense coverage can help with.
- Accurate documentation
- Clear billing processes
- Consider legal expense insurance
What does physiotherapy clinic insurance cost in Ontario?
As a general guide, many single location Ontario physiotherapy clinics see roughly $1,500 to $5,000 a year for the clinic's own package of general liability, property and business interruption. Practitioners' individual professional liability and cyber coverage are usually priced separately. These are estimates only. See our clinic insurance cost guide.
Raises the price
- Many practitioners and treatment rooms
- High value equipment
- Past claims
- Several locations
Helps lower it
- Documented contractor insurance checks
- Alarm and security systems
- Clean claims history
- Written clinical policies
Budget separately
- Practitioners' own professional liability
- Cyber and privacy coverage
- WSIB for eligible workers

Physiotherapy Clinic Insurance FAQs

How much professional liability do physiotherapists need in Ontario?
The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario requires at least $5 million per incident, with no deductible, coverage for the full scope of practice and at least 10 years of tail coverage after the physiotherapist stops practising.
Does my physiotherapists' insurance cover the clinic?
Usually not fully. Individual policies protect the physiotherapist. The clinic can be named in claims and needs its own entity professional liability, general liability and property coverage.
What if my physiotherapists are independent contractors?
Require each contractor to carry College compliant insurance and provide proof each year, and keep the clinic's own coverage in place for claims that name the business.
Do clinics need cyber insurance?
Most do. Clinics hold personal health information, rely on booking and billing systems, and are frequent ransomware targets. Under PHIPA, many breaches must be reported to patients and the Information and Privacy Commissioner, which costs time and money.
Does a clinic need employment practices liability?
It is worth considering. Clinics employ front desk staff and often engage practitioners as contractors, which can lead to wrongful dismissal, harassment or misclassification claims. EPL covers defence costs and settlements for those claims.

The Commercial Insurance Difference: Feedback from those referred
Proactive Broker Relationship.
The most noticeable difference was the fact that I no longer felt that I was needed to manage the broker... the brokers came to me with proactive recommendations and knew when to push and shop the market and when not to. When the topic of business insurance comes up, I always refer fellow business owners.

Security Blanket For My Business
I was always the type of customer that never believed in insurance and only really got it because I had to. Then I connected with a broker through Commercial Insurance.ca and they asked me questions no one else ever did and that's how I knew something was different. They took the time to understand and evaluate the risks. Well, I ended up getting some extra coverage (legal expense) and thank goodness I did. Something fairly innocent turned into something quite nasty and I didn't have to do too much... my coverage took care of it. Now I look at Insurance as a security blanket for my business.

They had my back
No one likes buying insurance because it's a bit of a bet against yourself. You just hope that when the bad things happen that insurance will do what it said it would do in the first place. Their specialist stand behind the policy's that they bind. They never professed to get me the best price, but they did say they have my back, and have my back, they did.
