Quick answer
What insurance does a massage therapy clinic need in Ontario?
Registered massage therapists in Ontario must carry professional liability of at least $2 million per occurrence and $5 million aggregate, with a deductible of no more than $5,000 and 10 years of tail coverage, under CMTO by-laws. The clinic also needs general liability, property, business interruption and cyber coverage, plus entity coverage for claims that name the business.
RMT coverage and clinic coverage
The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario requires registered massage therapists to carry professional liability of at least $2,000,000 per occurrence and $5,000,000 aggregate per year, with a deductible of no more than $5,000, and to maintain coverage for at least 10 years after they stop practising.
Clinics are often run by an owner RMT with several contractor therapists. The clinic still needs its own general liability, property and entity coverage, and a process for confirming every therapist's insurance each year.

What coverage does a massage clinic need?
These are the coverages most massage clinic programs include.
Entity professional and general liability
Covers the clinic for treatment claims that name the business and for premises injuries such as a client slipping on a wet floor. Abuse and molestation coverage is an important and sometimes limited area to review.
- Claims naming the clinic
- Premises injuries
- Review abuse and molestation limits

Property, equipment and business interruption
Your leasehold improvements, treatment equipment, furniture and inventory are the clinic's biggest physical assets. Property and equipment breakdown coverage protect them, and business interruption helps replace lost income if a fire, flood or equipment failure closes the clinic.
- Tables, linens and equipment
- Retail product inventory
- Leasehold improvements

Cyber and privacy liability
Ontario clinics that hold personal health information are health information custodians under PHIPA and must notify patients, and in many cases the Information and Privacy Commissioner, after a privacy breach. Cyber insurance helps pay for breach response, notification, system recovery and lost income after a ransomware attack.
- Ransomware and system recovery
- Breach notification and legal help
- See clinic cyber and privacy insurance

What does massage therapy clinic insurance cost in Ontario?
As a general guide, many single location Ontario massage therapy clinics see roughly $800 to $2,500 a year for the clinic's own package of general liability, property and business interruption. Practitioners' individual professional liability and cyber coverage are usually priced separately. These are estimates only. See our clinic insurance cost guide.

Massage Therapy Clinic Insurance FAQs

How much insurance does an RMT need in Ontario?
CMTO requires at least $2 million per occurrence and $5 million annual aggregate, a deductible of no more than $5,000 and at least 10 years of coverage after the RMT stops practising.
Does my clinic need insurance if all RMTs have their own?
Yes. The clinic needs general liability, property and entity coverage for claims that name the business and for premises injuries.
What is abuse and molestation coverage?
It covers allegations of abuse or misconduct, which are a real risk in hands on therapy. Many policies exclude it or cap it at a low limit, so review it carefully.
Do clinics need cyber insurance?
Most do. Clinics hold personal health information, rely on booking and billing systems, and are frequent ransomware targets. Under PHIPA, many breaches must be reported to patients and the Information and Privacy Commissioner, which costs time and money.

The Commercial Insurance Difference: Feedback from those referred
Proactive Broker Relationship.
The most noticeable difference was the fact that I no longer felt that I was needed to manage the broker... the brokers came to me with proactive recommendations and knew when to push and shop the market and when not to. When the topic of business insurance comes up, I always refer fellow business owners.

Security Blanket For My Business
I was always the type of customer that never believed in insurance and only really got it because I had to. Then I connected with a broker through Commercial Insurance.ca and they asked me questions no one else ever did and that's how I knew something was different. They took the time to understand and evaluate the risks. Well, I ended up getting some extra coverage (legal expense) and thank goodness I did. Something fairly innocent turned into something quite nasty and I didn't have to do too much... my coverage took care of it. Now I look at Insurance as a security blanket for my business.

They had my back
No one likes buying insurance because it's a bit of a bet against yourself. You just hope that when the bad things happen that insurance will do what it said it would do in the first place. Their specialist stand behind the policy's that they bind. They never professed to get me the best price, but they did say they have my back, and have my back, they did.
