Quick answer

What insurance does a dental office need in Ontario?

Ontario dentists carry professional liability through the RCDSO's Professional Liability Program, which provides $2 million per occurrence and moved to Navacord on January 1, 2026, with dentists able to choose other compliant coverage from 2029. The practice itself needs its own program: property and equipment for operatories and imaging, equipment breakdown, business interruption, general liability, cyber for patient records and employment practices liability.

Protecting the practice, not just the dentist

Professional liability for Ontario dentists has come through the RCDSO's Professional Liability Program, which provides $2 million per occurrence. The College has transferred the program to Navacord effective January 1, 2026, and has said that from 2029 dentists will be able to obtain liability coverage through any policy that meets College and regulatory requirements.

Whatever happens with professional liability, the practice needs its own coverage. A burst pipe, a failed compressor or a ransomware attack can close a practice for days or weeks, and those losses are not covered by malpractice insurance.

What coverage does a dental practice need?

These are the coverages a broker will usually build into a dental office program.

Property, equipment and business interruption

Your leasehold improvements, treatment equipment, furniture and inventory are the clinic's biggest physical assets. Property and equipment breakdown coverage protect them, and business interruption helps replace lost income if a fire, flood or equipment failure closes the clinic.

  • Chairs, units and operatory equipment
  • Imaging and CAD CAM systems
  • Leasehold improvements

Equipment breakdown

Compressors, vacuum systems, autoclaves and imaging equipment can fail electrically or mechanically. Equipment breakdown pays for repair or replacement and the income lost while you are down.

  • Compressors and suction systems
  • Autoclaves and sterilizers
  • Panoramic and CBCT imaging

Commercial general liability

CGL covers the premises risks that practitioner malpractice policies do not: a patient slipping in the waiting room, a visitor tripping on a mat, or damage to your landlord's property. Most commercial leases require it.

  • Slips and falls in the clinic
  • Damage to the landlord's premises
  • Usually $2 million to $5 million

Cyber and privacy liability

Ontario clinics that hold personal health information are health information custodians under PHIPA and must notify patients, and in many cases the Information and Privacy Commissioner, after a privacy breach. Cyber insurance helps pay for breach response, notification, system recovery and lost income after a ransomware attack.

Dental practice risks worth planning for

Water and ceiling leaks

Dental offices in plazas and medical buildings often share plumbing with other tenants. A leak from above can damage operatories and equipment and close the practice. Business interruption should reflect how long it would take to rebuild and re equip.

  • Know your lease's repair obligations
  • Set a realistic business interruption period
  • Document equipment values

Buying or selling a practice

Practice transitions change who owns the equipment, leasehold improvements and records, and who is responsible for past treatment. Review insurance early in any purchase or sale.

  • Property and BI on closing day
  • Records custody and privacy
  • Associate and staff agreements

What does dental office insurance cost in Ontario?

As a general guide, many single location Ontario dental offices see roughly $3,000 to $10,000 a year for the clinic's own package of general liability, property and business interruption. Practitioners' individual professional liability and cyber coverage are usually priced separately. These are estimates only. See our clinic insurance cost guide.

Raises the price

  • High equipment and leasehold values
  • Imaging and CAD CAM
  • Multiple operatories
  • Past water or equipment claims

Helps lower it

  • Sprinklered building and alarms
  • Maintenance contracts
  • Clean claims history
  • Realistic valuations

Budget separately

  • Practitioners' own professional liability
  • Cyber and privacy coverage
  • WSIB for eligible workers

What professional liability do Ontario dentists have?

Ontario dentists have been covered through the RCDSO's Professional Liability Program at $2 million per occurrence. The program moved to Navacord on January 1, 2026, and from 2029 dentists will be able to use any policy that meets College and regulatory requirements.

Does the PLP cover my dental office's equipment?

No. Professional liability covers treatment related claims. Your equipment, leasehold improvements and lost income need property, equipment breakdown and business interruption coverage.

How long should business interruption cover a dental office?

Long enough to repair the space, replace equipment and reopen, which can take months after a serious loss. Many practices choose 12 months or more.

Do clinics need cyber insurance?

Most do. Clinics hold personal health information, rely on booking and billing systems, and are frequent ransomware targets. Under PHIPA, many breaches must be reported to patients and the Information and Privacy Commissioner, which costs time and money.

Does a clinic need employment practices liability?

It is worth considering. Clinics employ front desk staff and often engage practitioners as contractors, which can lead to wrongful dismissal, harassment or misclassification claims. EPL covers defence costs and settlements for those claims.

The Commercial Insurance Difference: Feedback from those referred

  • Proactive Broker Relationship.

The most noticeable difference was the fact that I no longer felt that I was needed to manage the broker... the brokers came to me with proactive recommendations and knew when to push and shop the market and when not to. When the topic of business insurance comes up, I always refer fellow business owners.

  • Security Blanket For My Business

I was always the type of customer that never believed in insurance and only really got it because I had to. Then I connected with a broker through Commercial Insurance.ca and they asked me questions no one else ever did and that's how I knew something was different. They took the time to understand and evaluate the risks. Well, I ended up getting some extra coverage (legal expense) and thank goodness I did. Something fairly innocent turned into something quite nasty and I didn't have to do too much... my coverage took care of it. Now I look at Insurance as a security blanket for my business.

  • They had my back

No one likes buying insurance because it's a bit of a bet against yourself. You just hope that when the bad things happen that insurance will do what it said it would do in the first place.  Their specialist stand behind the policy's that they bind. They never professed to get me the best price, but they did say they have my back, and have my back, they did.
