Quick answer
What insurance does a med spa need in Ontario?
An Ontario med spa typically needs medical malpractice or aesthetics professional liability for injectables, lasers and other treatments, commercial general liability, products liability for skincare sold, property and equipment coverage for lasers and devices, business interruption, cyber and EPL. Injections are controlled acts in Ontario, so who performs them and under whose authority affects both compliance and coverage.
Why med spa coverage needs care
Injecting a substance such as a neuromodulator or filler is a controlled act under Ontario's Regulated Health Professions Act. It must be performed by a regulated professional with the authority to do so, or under a proper delegation or order that meets the relevant college's standards. Insurers will ask who performs each treatment and under what authority.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario also sets rules on advertising, such as limits on before and after photos in unsolicited public advertising. Getting compliance right matters, because a treatment performed outside the rules may not be covered.

What coverage does a med spa need?
These are the coverages a broker will usually build into a med spa program.
Aesthetics professional liability
Covers claims that a treatment caused injury or an unsatisfactory outcome, from injectables and fillers to lasers, peels and body contouring. Each treatment and each practitioner must be disclosed.
- Injectables and fillers
- Laser and energy based devices
- Nurses, physicians and aestheticians

Products liability
Selling skincare, serums and home care products creates product liability exposure. Private label products carry more risk than established brands.
- Retail skincare
- Private label products
- Adverse reaction claims

Property, equipment and business interruption
Your leasehold improvements, treatment equipment, furniture and inventory are the clinic's biggest physical assets. Property and equipment breakdown coverage protect them, and business interruption helps replace lost income if a fire, flood or equipment failure closes the clinic.
- Lasers and energy based devices
- Leasehold improvements
- Product inventory

Cyber and privacy liability
Ontario clinics that hold personal health information are health information custodians under PHIPA and must notify patients, and in many cases the Information and Privacy Commissioner, after a privacy breach. Cyber insurance helps pay for breach response, notification, system recovery and lost income after a ransomware attack.
- Ransomware and system recovery
- Breach notification and legal help
- See clinic cyber and privacy insurance

What does med spa insurance cost in Ontario?
As a general guide, many single location Ontario med spas see roughly $3,000 to $12,000 a year for the clinic's own package of general liability, property and business interruption. Practitioners' individual professional liability and cyber coverage are usually priced separately. These are estimates only. See our clinic insurance cost guide.

Helps lower it
- Clear delegation and medical directives
- Documented consent and photos

Med Spa Insurance FAQs

Who can perform cosmetic injections in Ontario?
Injections are a controlled act under the Regulated Health Professions Act. They must be performed by a regulated professional authorized to do so, or under a delegation or order that meets that college's standards. Confirm your model with a health lawyer and disclose it to your insurer.
Does med spa insurance cover unhappy clients?
Professional liability covers claims of injury or negligence. Purely cosmetic dissatisfaction without injury may not be covered, which is why consent and documentation matter.
Do I need separate coverage for lasers?
Lasers and energy based devices must be disclosed and covered under your professional liability, and the equipment itself needs property and equipment breakdown coverage.
Do clinics need cyber insurance?
Most do. Clinics hold personal health information, rely on booking and billing systems, and are frequent ransomware targets. Under PHIPA, many breaches must be reported to patients and the Information and Privacy Commissioner, which costs time and money.
Does a clinic need employment practices liability?
It is worth considering. Clinics employ front desk staff and often engage practitioners as contractors, which can lead to wrongful dismissal, harassment or misclassification claims. EPL covers defence costs and settlements for those claims.

The Commercial Insurance Difference: Feedback from those referred
Proactive Broker Relationship.
The most noticeable difference was the fact that I no longer felt that I was needed to manage the broker... the brokers came to me with proactive recommendations and knew when to push and shop the market and when not to. When the topic of business insurance comes up, I always refer fellow business owners.

Security Blanket For My Business
I was always the type of customer that never believed in insurance and only really got it because I had to. Then I connected with a broker through Commercial Insurance.ca and they asked me questions no one else ever did and that's how I knew something was different. They took the time to understand and evaluate the risks. Well, I ended up getting some extra coverage (legal expense) and thank goodness I did. Something fairly innocent turned into something quite nasty and I didn't have to do too much... my coverage took care of it. Now I look at Insurance as a security blanket for my business.

They had my back
No one likes buying insurance because it's a bit of a bet against yourself. You just hope that when the bad things happen that insurance will do what it said it would do in the first place. Their specialist stand behind the policy's that they bind. They never professed to get me the best price, but they did say they have my back, and have my back, they did.
