Quick answer
What insurance does a multidisciplinary clinic need in Ontario?
A multidisciplinary clinic needs coverage for the business that sits around its practitioners: entity professional liability for claims naming the clinic, general liability, abuse and molestation coverage, property and business interruption, cyber for shared patient records and employment practices liability. Each regulated practitioner must also meet their own college's insurance requirements, which range from $2 million to $5 million per occurrence.
More disciplines, more moving parts
Each regulated practitioner in your clinic answers to their own college, and those colleges set different insurance requirements. In Ontario, for example, physiotherapists and chiropractors must carry $5 million, while massage therapists and optometrists must carry $2 million per occurrence with a $5 million aggregate.
The clinic sits above all of them. Patients see one brand, and claims often name the clinic. A good program covers the business, confirms every practitioner's insurance and closes gaps between them.

Running a clinic with contractor practitioners
Contracts and proof of insurance
Your agreements with contractor practitioners should require college compliant insurance, proof every year and notice if coverage lapses. Keep a simple tracker so nothing expires unnoticed.
- Annual certificates from every practitioner
- Notice of cancellation requirements
- Clear scope of services in each agreement

Abuse and molestation coverage
Hands on therapies carry a real risk of misconduct allegations. Many policies exclude or tightly limit abuse and molestation coverage, so review the limit and conditions carefully.
- Check for exclusions and sublimits
- Screening and chaperone policies
- Clear consent and draping practices

Multidisciplinary Clinic Insurance FAQs

Is my clinic liable for contractor practitioners?
It can be named in claims involving practitioners who work under the clinic's brand, even if they are contractors. Entity professional liability protects the clinic, and each practitioner should carry their own college compliant coverage.
Do all practitioners need the same insurance limit?
No. Each college sets its own minimum. Your clinic may choose to require a higher common standard in its contractor agreements.
Do unregulated practitioners need insurance?
Yes. Practitioners who are not regulated by a college, such as some wellness providers, should still carry professional liability, and the clinic should confirm it.
Do clinics need cyber insurance?
Most do. Clinics hold personal health information, rely on booking and billing systems, and are frequent ransomware targets. Under PHIPA, many breaches must be reported to patients and the Information and Privacy Commissioner, which costs time and money.
Does a clinic need employment practices liability?
It is worth considering. Clinics employ front desk staff and often engage practitioners as contractors, which can lead to wrongful dismissal, harassment or misclassification claims. EPL covers defence costs and settlements for those claims.

The Commercial Insurance Difference: Feedback from those referred
Proactive Broker Relationship.
The most noticeable difference was the fact that I no longer felt that I was needed to manage the broker... the brokers came to me with proactive recommendations and knew when to push and shop the market and when not to. When the topic of business insurance comes up, I always refer fellow business owners.

Security Blanket For My Business
I was always the type of customer that never believed in insurance and only really got it because I had to. Then I connected with a broker through Commercial Insurance.ca and they asked me questions no one else ever did and that's how I knew something was different. They took the time to understand and evaluate the risks. Well, I ended up getting some extra coverage (legal expense) and thank goodness I did. Something fairly innocent turned into something quite nasty and I didn't have to do too much... my coverage took care of it. Now I look at Insurance as a security blanket for my business.

They had my back
No one likes buying insurance because it's a bit of a bet against yourself. You just hope that when the bad things happen that insurance will do what it said it would do in the first place. Their specialist stand behind the policy's that they bind. They never professed to get me the best price, but they did say they have my back, and have my back, they did.
